Brits looking for cheap Spain holidays in 2024 may prefer Benidorm, but there is a lesser-known town nearby you should consider.

Without a doubt, Benidorm is one of the top destinations in Spain for British travellers seeking affordable alcohol, sunny weather, and stunning beaches.

However, another town worth visiting is only 20 minutes away by car. With its stunning Old Town, hilltop setting, and white architecture, it has earned the moniker "Santorini of Spain." If you are looking for a vacation with beautiful beaches, delicious food, and a dash of culture, Altea provides enough to see and do. It may not have the same party scene as Benidorm.

If you need a vacation from the land of 88p drinks and £2 hangover fry-ups, it is easy enough to enjoy a day out as many buses run between the two locations.

The stunning Old Town, tucked away among the white-washed buildings, has many local eateries, pubs, stores and boutiques where you can grab a memento or two and is a significant draw for tourists.

There are numerous local markets throughout the week, so be sure to pack light because it is difficult to resist some of those stunning stalls. It is the location where you should allow lots of time to explore. However, some past visitors have advised that, in the summer, you prefer to go early when it is calmer.

"Take a 15-minute tram ride from Benidorm to Altea; it is a beautiful small town away from the busy city of Benidorm," one content vacationer commented on Tripadvisor. Walking up the old town's twisting roads can be challenging for those with mobility issues, but it is a fantastic experience. The cathedral and old town square, Spain's most picturesque ancient town, are located at the summit. Here, you can have a meal or a drink. Awe-inspiring views of the Alps and the Mediterranean are available from both sides. The work is certainly worth it."

The Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa San Miguel Arcangel, with its striking wooden facade, sumptuous interiors, and breathtaking views across the Spanish countryside, is a must-see for visitors seeking a dose of culture.

Altea is an excellent place for beachgoers since it has an equally beautiful sandy shoreline to Benidorm, but it also has the advantage of being less congested.

The primary sandy beach, Altea Beach, features a promenade surrounded by eateries, cafes, and crystal-clear waves. It is not a hidden gem, but the beach is quieter than Benidorm's throng during the busy summer months. It is also conveniently close to the party town, so it is perfect if you want to escape the bustle.

Due to Benidorm's popularity, there are many inexpensive flights to Alicante airport, including those operated by Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and TUI. This makes getting to Altea easy. Regarding lodging, Tripadvisor provides a helpful list of the top hotels in Altea, starting from £45 per night. If you are not too concerned about staying in a hotel, Booking.com and Kayak offer accommodations starting at £45 per night for hotels and apartments.
