Protesters from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University have taken the streets, causing significant disruption on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Their demand? The complete elimination of the quota system in government recruitment.
Over 300 students gathered at Ashekpur on the highway and initiated a demonstration at approximately 10:30 pm.
Blocking vehicular movement to assert their demand resulted in significant traffic congestion on both lanes.
The organizers decided to end their programme at noon, following a demonstration that lasted an hour and a half.
Armed with banners and festoons, the students passionately chanted various slogans to support their demands as they occupied the road, demonstrating a powerful unity in their cause.
Taufiqur Rahman, a student participating in the protest, voiced his discontent with the quota system, stating that the purpose of the country's liberation was to eliminate discrimination.Today, the students have taken a stand, determined to eradicate any traces of discrimination.
Taufiqur Rahman stated, many students are deeply frustrated due to their inability to find employment. This frustration is a stark reminder of the urgency of their demand and their concerns about the fairness of reinstating the quota system in government jobs.
Consequently, the students made a specific and apparent demand to revise the quota system, highlighting their desire for fair and equal opportunity in government jobs.
Lokman Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Tangail Sadar Police Station, reported that the students finally dispersed from the highway after a lengthy one-and-a-half hours, demonstrating their commitment to a peaceful protest.
