The seasoned Australian batsman Steve Smith firmly asserts that he has no intentions of slowing down his illustrious cricketing journey. In a significant move, he has secured a lucrative long-term contract with the Sydney Sixers in the highly competitive Big Bash League (BBL).
A 35-year-old recently signed a three-year contract with the Sixers. The team is expected to have the opportunity to participate in four BBL games during the home summer, which will take place between the final Test against India and the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
Despite being left out of Australia's Twenty20 World Cup squad for the tournament in the United States and the Caribbean, Smith remains dedicated to participating in all game formats.
"At the moment, I don't have any specific plans in mind. I am simply relishing the joy of playing." "I'm feeling quite relaxed and eagerly anticipating the upcoming summer," he informed reporters during a press conference on Tuesday.
I plan on attending a few BBL games this year to assess the situation and determine our next steps. Whenever an opportunity arises, I eagerly seize it.
After David Warner retired from Tests following the Pakistan series last home summer, Smith took on the role of opening the batting for Australia in series against West Indies and New Zealand.
In eight innings, he scored 171 runs, with an average of 28.25, significantly lower than his career average of 56.97.
Smith expressed uncertainty regarding his participation in the upcoming five-match series against India, set to commence on November 22 at Perth Stadium.
According to him, his teammates expressed a desire for him to return to the number four position, which has been his primary role throughout his Test career.
"Based on my discussions, it seems likely that we will be heading to England. The plan is for the boys to participate in the T20s while I will be there for the one-dayers. However, the final decision will be made after these matches," he explained.
"Behind the scenes, discussions are taking place." I came across some remarks by Usman [Khawaja], expressing his preference for me batting at number four. Marnus Labuschagne shares a similar thought process.
"I am content in any situation and willing to fulfil any role for the team's benefit." "To me, it's simply a role."
