A murder case has been ordered to be recorded against Sheikh Hasina and six other individuals by a court in Dhaka. The case pertains to the gunning down of a shopkeeper in the Mohammadpur area of the capital.
In a recent development, Rajesh Chowdhury, the magistrate of the chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court, has issued an order instructing the Mohammadpur police station to register the allegations surrounding the murder as a case officially. The order was passed at approximately 2:45 pm on Tuesday.
Apart from the main accused, several others have also been implicated. These include Obaidul Quader, the general secretary of the Awami League and former road transport and bridges minister; Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the former home minister; Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, the former inspector general of police (IGP); Habibur Rahman, the former commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Harun-Or-Rashid, an additional commissioner, and Biplab Kumar Sarker, a joint commissioner.
In a recent development, SM Amir Hamja, the plaintiff, formally requested the court to accept his case. The court promptly recorded his statement at approximately noon and issued the order.
Based on the case statement, it has been reported that the police allegedly used excessive force during the quota reform protests. On July 19th, Abu Sayeed found himself in the line of fire when he was struck by live ammunition in Basila, Mohammadpur.
According to official reports, the death toll from the quota reform protests has reached 580. Amidst student-led protests, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister on August 5th and sought refuge in India.
