During the 75th anniversary summit, NATO allies made a significant announcement regarding transferring F-16 jets to Ukraine.

They also reiterated their commitment to Kyiv's eventual membership in the alliance. However, the summit was overshadowed by political uncertainties in the United States.

Amid the grandeur of the three-day event in the US capital, President Joe Biden is seeking to unite the Western nations and alleviate any concerns among voters about his fitness for the job, given his age of 81, which surpasses NATO's age by six years.

President Biden personally greeted each of the 31 leaders of the alliance, emphasising the need for them to match Russia's increased military production. This production has significantly escalated since President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine two years ago.

In a committed address to the North Atlantic Council, the official decision-making body of the alliance, President Biden made it clear that the defense of every inch of NATO territory is a non-negotiable commitment. Speaking at Washington's convention center amidst a scorching heat wave, Biden emphasized the collective effort required to uphold this pledge.

In a significant development, President Biden has revealed that Denmark and the Netherlands have commenced the delivery of US-made F-16 jets to Ukraine.

The move fulfills a crucial commitment made by the United States to Kyiv last year, as Ukraine has faced challenges in achieving air superiority against Russia.

In a recent announcement, President Biden revealed the introduction of new air defence systems for Ukraine. These systems, which include [specific details], will significantly enhance Ukraine's ability to defend against aerial threats. Additionally, he disclosed that the United States had agreed to periodically station long-range missiles in Germany, further bolstering NATO's deterrence capabilities in Europe.

During the evening, Biden hosted the NATO leaders at a gala dinner. The event was accompanied by storm clouds, which unfortunately led to the cancellation of a planned flypast. However, a rainbow was spotted over the White House, adding a touch of luck to the occasion.

In a striking analogy, Biden drew a parallel between the alliance and his childhood neighborhood, emphasizing the importance of collective support and cooperation.

He said everyone came together to lend a hand, just like in a tight-knit community. When a neighbor was in need, you showed great courage and resilience when facing the bullies causing trouble in the neighbourhood.

In a recent statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasised the significance of the F-16 transfer, suggesting that it serves as a reminder to Vladimir Putin that Ukraine and the United States are determined to outlast any challenges they may face.

In the lead-up to November's presidential election, Donald Trump, the White House challenger, has raised the possibility of a swift peace settlement by urging Ukraine to cede territory to Russia. This stance has contributed to his growing popularity in recent polls, where he currently surpasses Biden.

The Republican mogul has raised concerns about the effectiveness of NATO, an alliance established in 1949 to provide collective defence against Moscow. He believes that the United States bears an unfair burden in supporting the organisation.

"Terror must fail."

In a devastating turn of events, a series of missile strikes unleashed by Russia on Ukraine has left a trail of destruction and loss of life. Tragically, the city of Kyiv, including a children's hospital, has been reduced to rubble.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the F-16s during the summit, where Biden invited him.

Zelensky expressed his belief on social media that the new aircraft would contribute to achieving peace, emphasizing the failure of terror.

The summit aimed to strengthen the alliance and ensure its resilience against potential changes in US leadership. One of the ways this was addressed was by granting NATO a more prominent role in coordinating arms delivery to Ukraine, reducing reliance on the United States.

NATO leaders have committed significantly to Ukraine by pledging 40 billion euros ($43 billion) in military aid "within the next year." This move comes as a response to the delay in US assistance caused by President Trump's allies in Congress to enhance regional stability.

According to reports, there have been discussions among Trump's aides regarding the possibility of linking aid to Ukraine with the condition of Kyiv participating in negotiations. Additionally, China, rather than Russia, is considered a more significant concern for US interests.

The NATO leaders' statement also expressed "profound concern" regarding China's industrial support to Russia.

In a move demonstrating his commitment to expanding NATO's influence in the Asia-Pacific region, President Biden has extended invitations to four crucial Pacific partners: Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

'Irreversible' Ukraine path to NATO

The summit made significant commitments to Ukraine, affirming its unwavering progress towards complete integration with the Euro-Atlantic community, which includes NATO membership.

Ukraine has long been striving to secure membership in NATO, a collective defense alliance that views an attack on any member as an attack on all.

However, both Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have expressed concerns about the potential consequences of involving Kyiv at this time, as it could potentially escalate into a conflict with nuclear-armed Russia, which currently occupies parts of Ukrainian territory.

During his visit to Ukraine, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured President Zelensky that Britain stands united in its support for Ukraine, regardless of political affiliations. This commitment contrasts the United States, where partisan divisions have impacted the country's stance.

Starmer's stance on Ukraine's use of UK missiles to strike into Russian territory drew a sharp response from Moscow.

During the summit, Starmer emphasised to reporters that NATO is currently more prominent and united than ever before, with a clear understanding of the threat posed by Russian aggression.
