There are strong indications that Faruk Ahmed, the former chief selector, is poised to assume the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) presidency. It is widely speculated that Nazmul Hasan Papon will soon vacate the position.
The sports adviser's office has contacted several cricket personalities to discuss the restructuring of the BCB. Faruk is currently leading the pack of potential candidates for the position of board president.
In a phone interview with the BSS today, Faruk confirmed that he met with sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan.
"I was approached about joining BCB in some capacity," he stated. "I expressed my willingness to work if they believed I was suitable for the role."
Faruk, however, did not directly comment on whether he was explicitly approached to become the board president.
His remarkable achievements as the chief selector and his decision to resign from the board in protest against several irregularities enhance his reputation among current officials.
The constitution of BCB explicitly states that the president must be chosen from the pool of directors.
Fortunately, the solution in that case is quite simple. Faruk Ahmed, who is not currently serving as a director, has the potential to be appointed as a director for the BCB through a nomination from the National Sports Council (NSC). Following this, he will assume the role of president after being elected by the BCB directors.
Faruk, conversely, would need to choose between Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Bobby to replace one of them at BCB. Both Yunus and Bobby joined the BCB as directors through the NSC.
Jalal Yunus is the director and oversees BCB's cricket operations committee, while Ahmed Sajjadul Alam is the tournament committee chairman.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon has not appeared since a student-led mass uprising removed the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
According to Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, an adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Interim Government, the ongoing stalemate regarding the BCB president post is expected to be resolved promptly.
The process is currently underway. I prefer to withhold my comments until a solution has been reached. "I am hopeful that you will receive positive updates shortly," he stated during his address to the media at the Secretariat today.
Faruk has held the position of chief selector for the BCB on two separate occasions. His first term was from 2003 to 2007, and he served a second term from 2013 to 2016.
