Large ship collision causes Baltimore bridge to collapse

Video obtained by CNN shows the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsing early Tuesday morning after being struck by a large ship.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) has reported that all traffic is being detoured. However, it remains uncertain whether any injuries have resulted from the incident. 

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott took to social media in the early hours, announcing his immediate departure to the scene of the unfolding "incident" at the bridge. He stated that emergency personnel have arrived at the scene and are currently working to address the situation.

The collision was captured on video, revealing a dramatic scene as a large boat approached one of the bridge's support columns. 

The impact caused a significant portion of the bridge to collapse into the water within seconds. The immediate impact resulted in the collapse of nearby sections of the bridge.

Video footage captured the dramatic scene as the crash caused billowing smoke and flames to engulf the air. A section of the bridge ominously gave way and collapsed onto the boat. A thick plume of dark smoke billowed into the sky, lingering there for an extended period.

Spanning 1.6 miles and boasting four lanes, the bridge stretches across the Patapsco River. It plays a crucial role as the outermost crossing of the Baltimore harbour and a vital connection for Interstate 695, also known as the Baltimore Beltway.

Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, inspiring him to write the words of the "Star-Spangled Banner'' while sitting near the site of the bridge named after him.
