Fortnite returns to iPhones in EU only

In a highly anticipated move, the popular video game Fortnite has finally returned to the iPhone after a four-year absence.

This feature will be available only to players within the European Union.

EU law mandates that Apple permit third-party app stores on its devices, a requirement not found in other regions.

In 2020, the game was pulled from the App Store amidst a heated payment dispute between Apple and Epic.

Users must install an alternative app store onto their phones to download the game.

The Epic Games Store has recently launched, making it available on Google Android devices for the first time.

Epic acknowledges that the process can be time-consuming and attributes the challenges to Apple and Google, accusing them of deliberately creating subpar installation experiences that involve multiple steps, confusing device settings, and alarming screens.

According to a statement from Apple, the company has made efforts to comply with new EU regulations by providing developers with enhanced capabilities. Apple has also prioritized user convenience and the protection of their privacy and security.

In an exciting development, Fortnite has recently launched its latest season, centered around the iconic character Doctor Doom from the Marvel universe.

In March, the Digital Markets Act, a new EU legislation, required Apple to permit alternative app stores on its devices.

In contrast, in other regions globally, apps can only be obtained through Apple's official App Store, as no such regulations exist.

"Fortnite has been released on iOS in Europe, according to Epic boss Tim Sweeney's announcement on X."

"Apple's ongoing refusal to allow Fortnite access to its billion-strong player base worldwide has sparked a fierce battle to reinstate fair market competition."

According to Apple, the primary motivation behind this decision is to enhance security.

On the other hand, Epic contends that this situation implies that Apple holds a monopoly and can impose exorbitant fees, reaching as high as a 30% commission on app developers' purchases.

Google also charges a commission when apps are downloaded through its Google Play store.

Interestingly, Google does permit the use of alternative app stores on its Android devices.

The Fortnite app was readily available for Android users to download directly from Epic Games onto their phones.

Fortnite, a popular online game, allows players to play for free. However, the game generates revenue by implementing a system where players can make in-game purchases. These purchases can range from cosmetic items like skins to powerful weapons.

In 2020, the app was removed from Apple and Google's app stores because Epic Games decided to stop paying the commission.

When will UK iPhones get Fortnite?

UK iPhone users cannot download Fortnite but can play the game through a browser. According to The Guardian's report, Epic Games aims to reintroduce the Fortnite app to iPhones in the UK by the end of 2025.

"By the end of next year," Tim Sweeney informed them, "we should be able to make progress unless Apple and Google successfully persuade the UK government to allow them to maintain their monopoly and prevent competition."

In May, a new competition law was passed, potentially opening the door for the emergence of alternative app stores on iPhones.

"This marks a significant step forward for developers and consumers, who can now start reaping the rewards of increased competition and options," stated Mr. Sweeney in an official press release.

In addition to its app store, Epic Games has expanded its offerings to include popular titles like Rocket League Sideswipe and Fall Guys.
