During his visit to Israel, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasised the critical nature of the ongoing negotiations, stating that they could potentially be the final opportunity to achieve a resolution and bring an end to the continuing conflict in Gaza.

"This moment is crucial, potentially the most significant chance we have, and perhaps the final opportunity, to bring the hostages back, achieve a ceasefire, and set everyone on a more promising trajectory towards lasting peace and security," expressed Blinken during his meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

In a recent statement, the US diplomat revealed that President Joe Biden had entrusted him with the crucial task of finalising and securing the agreement.

"The time has come for it to be completed. Blinken emphasised the importance of ensuring that no actions are taken that could disrupt the progress of this process.

"Efforts are being made to prevent any escalation, provocations, or actions that could hinder the progress of finalising this deal. Additionally, steps are being taken to avoid the conflict spreading to other areas or intensifying further."

Blinken, who has made multiple trips to the Middle East since Hamas attacked Israel in October, is set to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later today.

In a recent statement, the visiting secretary of state expressed concern over the current situation in Israel, describing it as a "fraught moment." The secretary of state also warned against any actions that could potentially escalate regional tensions. This comes in the wake of threats from Iran and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, who have vowed to seek revenge for the killings of two militant leaders.

According to Herzog, the return of the hostages still held in Gaza since the 7 October attack is a top priority for Israelis, who are eager to see their safe return as soon as possible. Although having a largely ceremonial role, Herzog emphasised the situation's urgency.

"Bringing back our hostages," Herzog told Blinken, emphasising the importance of this humanitarian objective and cause.
