Argentina beats Guatemala 4-1 in Copa warm-up

As part of their training for the Copa America, Argentina beat Guatemala 4-1 in a friendly game in Maryland on Friday. Lionel Messi scored two goals in the win.

Messi scored early to tie the game and then scored Argentina's fourth goal with a dink. The world champions returned from behind in their last game before defending their Copa América title against Canada next Thursday in Atlanta.

When Oscar Santis scored a free kick from far out to the left, it shocked Argentina's defenders and gave Guatemala the lead after only four minutes at Commanders Field in Landover.

Santis's cross went off and across the six-yard box. Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United scored an own goal by scooping an attempted clearance into his net.

However, Argentina did not have to wait long to tie the game again. In the 12th minute, they scored after Guatemala's custodian, Nicholas Hagen, made a terrible mistake.

When Hagen tried to clear a back pass, he messed up his try, and Messi scored right in the middle of the penalty area, where no one was covering him.

The leader of Argentina dutifully took advantage of the chance given him, taking a touch and putting away his 107th international goal with ease.

After that, it was just a matter of when Argentina would score their second since Guatemala was sitting deep and wanting to be pushed.

After 39 minutes, Argentina took the lead from the penalty spot after Nicolas Samayoa, a Guatemalan defender, tripped Valentin Carboni as the 19-year-old forward ran to the byline.

Instead of taking the penalty kick, Messi chose not to, and Lautaro Martinez went up to score the goal, making the score 2-1.

At the end of the first half, Messi hit a low, rasping free kick from the edge of the area that hit the inside of the post and almost made it 2-0 for Argentina.

After the bounce, Lautaro Martinez's overhead kick also hit the post. Lisandro Martinez tipped the loose ball into the goal, but the Manchester United defense was called offside.

In the 66th minute, the Argentines scored a fantastic team goal to make it 3-1.

On the edge of the box, Messi found Enzo Fernandez, who was free. The Chelsea player then slid a pass back to Messi inside the box.

The star player for Inter Miami set up Lautaro Martinez for an easy finish from close range with his first touch.

After getting the game's second goal in 77 minutes, Messi scored the third, finishing a beautiful pass from Angel Di Maria with a delicate finish over Hagen.
