Once again, heavy rainfall on Monday has resulted in flooding in five upazilas in Sunamganj. The district experienced significant rainfall, measuring 300mm, within 24 hours. Simultaneously, a surge of water from the mountains has occurred.

The roads in Sunamganj Sadar, Bishwambharpur, Tahirpur, Chhatak, and Dowarabazar upazilas have been flooded, causing significant inconvenience. Reports indicate that the flood water has successfully breached the areas along the banks of the Surma River in the city.

In Sunamganj, the situation worsens when there is heavy rainfall upstream, leading to an overflow of water from the mountains.

In just 24 hours, Cherrapunji, located in Meghalaya in India, experienced a staggering 313mm of rainfall. This remarkable amount of precipitation is certainly worth noting.

Due to flooding at three points, vehicular movement has been suspended on the Tahirpur-Sunamganj road. Unions in Chhatak Upazila, Islampur, Kalaruka, Nowarai, and Charmahalla are also experiencing flooding. Several areas in Dowarabazar upazila are currently experiencing flooding.

The ongoing rain and upstream overflow have led to a significant rise in the water level of several rivers in Sunamganj, such as Jadukata, Patnai, Rakti, Baulai, Kushiara, Naljur, Chela, Chalti, and Khashiamara.

Javed Hossain, a resident of Islampur village in Sunamganj Sadar upazila, reported that the road linking the village to the city had been entirely submerged by water. It has been reported that their transportation mode has now shifted to boats.

Md. Mamun Howladar, an executive engineer at the Water Development Board in Sunamganj, reported that heavy rain is forecasted.

On Tuesday morning, the amount of rainfall was noticeably reduced. The water level in Sunamganj and India's Cherrapunji rose significantly due to the heavy downpour. With the rain persisting, the situation could deteriorate even more.

In Sunamganj, a devastating flood began on June 16th, engulfing the entire district and leaving no area untouched. Over 1,000 villages in the district were inundated, affecting a staggering 800,000 individuals. Meanwhile, countless homes and streets were engulfed by water.

Approximately 25,000 families sought shelter in the homes of others, educational institutions, and various government and private organization buildings.

After June 23rd, the water level in the rivers began to recede. After the situation improved, many individuals decided to return to their homes.

Unfortunately, a significant number of individuals have yet to find their way back to their homes, exacerbating the already dire flood situation.
